The $20 Books Taught Me the Rules. The $5,000 Course Bought Me Time

Why the right trading education is not a shortcut around the work, but it can compress years of confusion, mistakes, and unnecessary pain.

Almost everything I teach and everything I have learned in trading started with a handful of books that cost roughly $20 each.

The timeless principles are sitting right there for anyone willing to study them. You can buy the books. You can read them. You can reread them. You can study the charts. You can go through market history. You can slowly start connecting the dots on your own.

That path works.

But here is the part people do not always want to admit.

There is a major difference between having access to information and knowing how to apply it effectively and under pressure.

Information is easy to find. Understanding takes time. Execution is usually where the real cost shows up.

The Course Did Not Teach Me Magic

I once took a trading course that cost more than $5,000.

Looking back, a lot of the material covered the same concepts I had already read in books. Some people might hear that and say, “Then the course was a ripoff.”

I do not look at it that way.

Could I have found success without taking that course?

Yes.

But would it have taken me longer to truly understand how to apply those principles?

Probably.

Maybe another year. Maybe two. Maybe longer.

The course did not magically make me profitable. It did not replace chart study. It did not remove the need for discipline. It did not eliminate losses, drawdowns, journaling, mistakes, frustration, or mental struggle.

But it helped me see the same principles from another angle.

It helped ingrain the information at a deeper level.

It helped me connect concepts I had already read about but had not fully internalized yet.

And in trading, that matters.

The Real Value Was Time

When people look at education, they often only see the price tag.

They ask, “Is this worth $5,000?”

That is the wrong question.

The better question is, “What could this save me?”

If the right education saves you years of confusion, repeated mistakes, emotional frustration, and trying to connect every dot alone, that can be worth far more than the money spent.

That does not mean every course is worth it.

Many are not.

There are plenty of fraudsters in this industry. There are plenty of people selling dreams, rented lifestyles, fake certainty, and the illusion that one strategy, one setup, or one indicator will change everything.

A course is not the road to riches.

A mentor is not a magic shortcut.

A subscription will not save you if you refuse to do the work.

But the right education can compress time.

Books can teach you the principles.

Courses can organize them.

Mentorship and coaching can personalize them.

Experience forces you to live them.

Each one has value, but none of them eliminate the work.

Everyone Learns Differently

Some people learn best by reading the same books over and over again.

Some people need structure.

Some people need a course.

Some people need coaching.

Some people need to see examples repeated again and again before the lesson finally clicks.

Some rare people can figure this business out mostly on their own in a few years. Others spend ten years making the same mistakes before it all clicks.

None of those paths are wrong.

But pretending the cheapest path is always the smartest path is just as foolish as believing the most expensive path guarantees success.

The real question is not, “Can I learn this for free?”

Of course you can.

You can learn almost anything for free now.

The better question is, “How much time, frustration, and avoidable pain am I willing to pay for by trying to figure everything out alone?”

That is how I look at trading education.

Not as a shortcut.

As an accelerator.

We Accept This Everywhere Else

This is what I find funny.

People will spend tens of thousands of dollars on a degree that may lead to an average job, but then they will penny-pinch when it comes to learning a skill that, if truly mastered, can completely change their financial future.

That has always seemed backwards to me.

  • We accept paying for education in almost every other field.

  • We accept paying for college.

  • We accept paying for certifications.

  • We accept paying for coaching in sports.

  • We accept paying for tutors.

  • We accept paying for business consultants.

  • We accept paying for personal trainers.

But when it comes to trading, people often want the result without the investment.

  • They want the skill without the apprenticeship.

  • They want the outcome without the repetition.

  • They want the confidence without the screen time.

That is not how mastery works.

The Lessons I Wish I Had Learned Earlier

I think about this the same way I think about what I am passing down to my kids.

A lot of us learn business, investing, trading, risk, money, and discipline the hard way. Many of us do not really start connecting the dots until our 20s, 30s, or even later.

Now that I have learned some of these lessons, I am trying to pass them down to my children while they are young.

Not because it will save them from struggle.

It won’t.

They are still going to make mistakes. They are still going to experience frustration. They are still going to deal with setbacks, bad decisions, losses, doubt, and pain.

That is part of life.

But if I can help them avoid some of the unnecessary wasted time, some of the avoidable mistakes, and some of the confusion I had to fight through alone, then maybe their ride is a little less bumpy.

Still bumpy.

Just not as brutal.

If I had known earlier what I know now, the road would not have been easy, but it likely would have been less painful. I still would have struggled. I still would have made mistakes. I still would have had to earn it.

But maybe I would have stopped walking in circles sooner.

That Is the Goal of Momentum Trading Strategy

That is how I view Momentum Trading Strategy.

It is not a promise that trading becomes easy.

It is not a shortcut around doing the work.

You are still going to have to study. You are still going to have to practice. You are still going to have to take losses. You are still going to have to build discipline and at times, you are still going to learn things the hard way.

But my goal is to help remove some of the unnecessary pain.

  • To organize the lessons.

  • To connect the dots faster.

  • To give you the tools, frameworks, and principles I wish I had understood earlier.

Education does not eliminate the climb, it just helps you stop walking in circles before you start climbing.

I wish you all the best on this amazing journey of life and trading.
